Knowing your model is an important part of your photo-shoot!
Making great images that have that WOW factor can really only be achieved if you have a great rapport with your Model, and an understanding of how he, or she works best. This genre of photography is a collaborative process, and building a relationship with your Model fosters a positive working environment. Collaboration can lead to better ideas, improved creativity, and a more enjoyable experience for both the photographer and the model.
By establishing trust you will build the rapport needed to create a sense of trust and comfort. This is crucial for capturing natural and authentic expressions, as a relaxed and comfortable model is more likely to open up in front of the camera.
At Welshot, we do the hard work for you – We get to know our Models first, before we introduce them to you, the photographer. We make sure the Models we bring to Welshot are going to be the right fit – for them, for us, for you!
This is a new blog series where we introduce you to the Models we will be bringing to our new range of photographic events for those photographers who are wanting to take photos for camera club competitions, serious about their own personal continued professional development and building a photographic portfolio.
Introducing Katey Spink
Katey holds a wealth of experience in all aspects of modelling. She often host studio days all over the country, and has recently led a “How to work with Models” event for Welshot. Katey has worked with official SONY & Canon at their photography portrait events. Her commercial work has been published in calendars, books & campaigns on Amazon (2023).Katey continues to regularly work with photographers 1:1 of all experience levels. She finds it easy to get into character when shooting; and can create elegant and delicate shapes equally as well as being able to give more attitude and strength in her expression & poses. Katey is able to shoot and pose without direction, but accepts and welcomes any ideas equally as much. Katey loves fashion and being creative when it comes to styling for shoots. At Welshot we absolutely know she always put 100% effort into organising her wardrobe, accessories, styling & ideas.
We asked Katey:
How did you get started in your modelling career?
I was working in a Bridal Boutique, my boss hand made all her gowns. She wanted to photograph them on a person as opposed to a mannequin – it was here I picked up the modelling bug! I naturally felt comfortable in front of the camera and loved dressing up in these gowns.
My images went on to be published in local magazines, newspaper adverts & even advertisements for wedding fairs.
After the bridal jobs I plunged myself into the modelling industry and started applying for agencies when I turned 18, the rest is history!
Do you consider yourself a Model first or something else?
Model / Unicorn?
What do you think your greatest achievement has been so far?
Becoming a full time self-employed boss lady / model – in an industry that people don’t think is a “real job” ; -)
Does anyone even know what a real job is?! I don’t want one of those..
If you could say just one thing to a photographer, what would you say?
Probably.. “I’m cold”
On location (outside) or studio?
Both!
Favourite snack?
Cheese & crackers, strawberries, Haribo, Galaxy. There’s too many!
What would your dream shoot look like?
Definitely somewhere tropical! A stunning beach, sunset, floaty dresses – you get the idea.
If you could give one bit of advice to a dancer/model just starting out what would it be?
Don’t be pressured into doing anything YOU don’t want to do. Pictures are out there, online, forever.
Sweet or savoury?
Is both an option?
Six people you’d love to have around the dinner table (past, present or future) and why?
In no particular order.. Princess Diana, Boris Johnson, Albert Einstein, Michelle Obama, Marie Curie & Ricky Gervais.
I mean can you even imagine the conversation? Remarkable people in history paired with bumbling Boris – lol!
Annie Leibovitz or Mario Testino?
Mario Testino!
Back of the camera images, Yes or No? (Do you like to be shown them?)
Yes absolutely!
Video or Still’s?
Both – video & stills are both so different! I love working with both types of project.
